YouTube Shorts is turning down the volume on recycled clips

YouTube says Shorts will now give more room to original work and less to clips lifted from other creators. For a brand, that makes the case for making your own footage stronger than ever.

There is a certain kind of YouTube channel everyone has scrolled past: the compilation page, the account that collects other people's viral moments and posts them with a caption. On 1 October 2026, YouTube signalled that those channels will get less help from the Shorts feed.

In a post on its Help Community titled "Prioritizing original content on Shorts", TeamYouTube said it is updating its recommendation systems to give original content more priority and to reduce the reach of material re-uploaded from other creators with nothing new added. Much of the coverage carries a 2 October date, simply because of the time difference with the US.

Where YouTube draws the line

Channels that mainly aggregate or re-upload other people's videos without significant changes are the ones likely to see less distribution. YouTube's Creator Liaison, Rene Ritchie, explained the thinking on the Creator Insider channel the same day, according to trade reports, and was clear that some common shortcuts do not make a clip yours:

  • Narration that simply describes what the viewer can already see.
  • Small technical changes such as cropping, filters or speeding a clip up.
  • Template edits applied in bulk across many clips.

Commentary, analysis, storytelling and distinctive editing are what count. Whether creators trimming Shorts from their own long videos are safe is reported differently: Android Authority says they should keep their visibility, while other outlets say YouTube has not spelled it out.

No warning light

YouTube has not published a percentage, a date, a timeline or any dashboard that tells a channel it has been treated as an aggregator. The only evidence will be reach. Ritchie did say that if a channel moves towards original work, the system will look at its reach again, so the label can be lifted. For sharing someone else's video, he pointed creators to the Posts tab, which links to the original instead of copying it.

Earning money is judged separately

This change is about recommendations. Monetisation is still governed by the YouTube Partner Program's reused content policy, which already asks for significant changes to borrowed material. In July 2025 YouTube renamed its repetitious content policy to inauthentic content, aimed at mass-produced and repetitive videos, while leaving the reused content rules as they were. Instagram and Facebook have moved the same way, limiting reach for reposted content in 2024, 2025 and again in April 2026.

What this means for a brand in the Gulf

  • Look honestly at your Shorts. If most of them are other people's footage with your caption on top, expect them to travel less.
  • Film more of your own. Product moments, behind the scenes, staff, customers (with permission) and events are all original by definition.
  • Cut Shorts from the long videos and shoots you already pay for. It is the cheapest source of footage that is clearly yours.
  • When you feature a creator, ask first, credit them and add a point of view of your own.
  • Watch Shorts views week by week from now, so any change can be explained rather than guessed.

There is a quiet upside here. Original Arabic and bilingual short video made for this region will be competing against fewer recycled compilations for the same attention.
