Instagram ranking in 2026: the signals that are on the record
Instagram's head has named three signals above the rest: watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach. This is what he actually said, what Meta has published about how each part of the app ranks content, and which popular tips have no official source.

There is no shortage of advice on the Instagram algorithm, and very little of it leads back to anything Instagram has actually said. That is a problem when brands and their agencies build whole content plans around it. Here we stay with two sources only: what Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has said publicly, and what Meta has published on how each part of Instagram ranks content.
Watch time, likes and sends
In January 2025 Mosseri named the three most important signals as watch time, likes and sends, meaning how often people share a post by direct message. He advised creators to track average watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach. Likes count for slightly more when reaching existing followers; sends count for slightly more when reaching people who do not follow the account.
It was not a new idea. In May 2024 he said that, in his experience, how often a post gets sent correlates with its overall reach more than anything else, and that rates matter more than counts. In May 2026 he made the point again: judge a post by its engagement rate among the people who saw it, not by how many people saw it.
- Watch time is how long people stay on a Reel or post. Earn attention in the opening seconds and keep the pace up.
- Likes per reach is the share of viewers who liked it, and it matters most with followers.
- Sends per reach is the share who passed it on privately. It matters most with non-followers, and it is the clearest single sign that a post deserves to be recommended.
Comments did not make Mosseri's three. They still have value, but the common claim that comments are the most important signal is not something he said.
Feed, Explore and Reels rank differently
Since 2023 Instagram has explained that each surface runs its own ranking, predicting different actions. The system cards Meta has published show the scale involved and what is being predicted:
- Feed: about 700 eligible posts are narrowed to about 500 and scored. The predictions include time spent, skipping, swiping through a carousel and the likelihood of a post being shared in a message.
- Explore: up to 1,500 items are collected and the top 100 are re-ranked, predicting follows, likes, comments, shares, saves and whether someone watches most of a video.
- Reels: about 100 Reels are scored to choose the next one, predicting whether someone watches beyond the first few seconds, shares it, uses the audio, follows the account, or watches more of it than most viewers of Reels of that length.
Carousels, Stories and Trial Reels
Carousels get a second look. In October 2024 Mosseri said Instagram often shows people the next slide of a carousel they scrolled past, and that carousels with music can appear in the Reels tab.
Posting your own feed post to your Story does not increase its reach, according to Mosseri in April 2026. It can still be worth doing for your followers, just not as a way to grow reach.
Trial Reels, introduced in December 2024, go to non-followers first, so an account can test an idea without it landing on the grid. Since April 2026 they can be scheduled.
Reading Insights in 2026
Since August 2024, views have been Instagram's main measure across Reels, Stories, photos, carousels and Live, and repeat views are included. In April 2026 Instagram added share rate, skip rate and views over time to Insights. Share rate is the nearest thing in Insights to Mosseri's sends per reach, and skip rate shows how many people left a Reel in its opening seconds. Both belong in any monthly social report you receive or produce.
Tips with no official source
The following turn up in plenty of guides, and when we checked, none could be traced to Instagram or to Mosseri:
- A private share is worth three to five likes.
- Two-way conversation has become a ranking signal.
- Watch time is the single most important factor. Mosseri named three signals and did not rank them.
- Instagram moved from three-second plays to views. In fact Instagram renamed Plays as Views in 2024; the three-second measure is a Facebook metric.
- Saves carry three times the weight of likes.
Putting it to work
- Judge each post on rates rather than totals: likes per reach, share rate and average watch time.
- Make things people want to send to a friend: useful, funny, surprising, or aimed at an interest they share.
- Win attention in the first seconds of every Reel, and use skip rate to see whether you are managing it.
- Use carousels when a subject needs depth, and Trial Reels to test ideas on new audiences.
- Treat any algorithm tip that does not name its source with caution.
