Fixing an e-invoice in the UAE: why every correction is a credit note

Under UAE e-invoicing, an issued invoice cannot be cancelled, deleted or edited. Corrections happen through credit notes with a reason code, a link to the original and a 14-day deadline.

A familiar habit in many finance teams is to void a wrong invoice and start again. E-invoicing ends that habit. In the Ministry of Finance's words, "There is no concept of cancellation of an invoice." After an e-invoice has been issued, reducing or reversing it requires an electronic credit note. Negative invoices are not permitted, and nor are debit notes. If a figure needs to go up, you issue a fresh tax invoice.

The four triggers

Ministerial Decision 243 of 2025 requires an electronic credit note when a transaction is cancelled, when the price comes down, when money is returned in whole or in part, or when there is an administrative or numerical mistake.

Six reason codes

Each credit note states why it exists, using a code from the PINT AE specification that tracks Article 61 of the VAT Decree-Law:

  • DL8.61.1.A for a cancelled supply, which is also used for an invoice sent to the wrong customer.
  • DL8.61.1.B where the tax treatment changed because the nature of the supply changed.
  • DL8.61.1.C where the agreed price changed for any reason.
  • DL8.61.1.D where goods or services came back and money was refunded in full or in part.
  • DL8.61.1.E where tax was charged, or a treatment applied, by mistake.
  • VD for a volume discount.

Apart from volume discounts, every credit note must point to the invoice it corrects.

Fourteen days

Article 62 of the VAT Decree-Law allows 14 days from the event, such as the cancellation, the price change or the refund, to issue the credit note. Businesses outside VAT but inside e-invoicing have the same 14 days under Ministerial Decision 243. A credit note issued late costs AED 100, with a ceiling of AED 5,000 per month.

Flexible, within limits

  • A credit note may cover only part of an invoice, for example one cancelled item.
  • A single credit note may relate to several invoices.
  • Provisional invoices are adjusted afterwards with a credit note or an extra invoice.

What it must show

The Article 60 particulars still apply: Tax Credit Note clearly displayed, the parties' details and TRNs, the date, the reason, the tax in dirhams and enough detail to identify the original supply. Electronic credit notes no longer need the before-and-after value comparison, and in PINT AE they do not need a payment method.

Habits to change

  • Reserve voids for drafts that were never sent.
  • Note the reason for every credit note, so the right code follows.
  • Count the 14 days from the event itself.
  • Disregard any claim that an e-invoice can be withdrawn within a few hours. No such window exists in the UAE.

The 14-day rule already applies under today's VAT system, so it is worth getting right now. If you would like your billing process reviewed before e-invoicing arrives, ALXO can help.
