UAE: standard rate 5%, since 1 January 2018. Amounts in AED, to 2 decimal places.
VAT = AED 10,000.00 × 5% = AED 500.00. Total = net + VAT.

What it does
Four GCC countries charge VAT: the UAE at 5% since 1 January 2018, Saudi Arabia at 15% since 1 July 2020, Oman at 5% since 16 April 2021, and Bahrain at 10% since 1 January 2022. Qatar and Kuwait had not introduced VAT as of September 2026. The calculator works in each country's currency and its decimals: two for the dirham and the riyal, three for the Bahraini dinar and the Omani rial.
Adding VAT is a multiplication. Taking it out is where mistakes happen: divide the total by one plus the rate rather than knocking the percentage off. AED 10,500 divided by 1.05 is AED 10,000, so the VAT inside it is AED 500; taking 5% off AED 10,500 gives AED 9,975, which is wrong. Rates and thresholds are as published by each tax authority in September 2026. They can change, so check with the Federal Tax Authority or ZATCA before you rely on a figure.
How to use it
- Pick a country and the rate and currency are set for you.
- Say whether you are adding VAT to a net price or taking it out of a total that already includes it.
- Enter the amount and read the net figure, the VAT and the total, with the sum shown.
- Put the VAT on its own line on your invoice, with your tax registration number.
Questions, answered
How do I add 5% VAT to a price in the UAE?
Work out the VAT by multiplying the price by 0.05, then add it: AED 10,000 becomes AED 10,500 once AED 500 of VAT is included. For Saudi Arabia, multiply by 0.15 instead, so SAR 10,000 becomes SAR 11,500.
When does a business have to register for VAT?
In both the UAE and Saudi Arabia, registration becomes mandatory once taxable supplies over twelve months exceed 375,000 (AED or SAR respectively), and voluntary registration is possible from 187,500. In Bahrain the figures are BHD 37,500 and BHD 18,750; in Oman, OMR 38,500 and OMR 19,250. Confirm your own position with the tax authority or an adviser.
Do Qatar and Kuwait have VAT?
As of September 2026, no. Neither country has brought in VAT, so invoices there have no VAT line. Check again before relying on that, since Qatar approved an e-invoicing law in May 2026.
How is VAT rounded?
Amounts round to the nearest fils or halala, or to three decimal places for the Bahraini dinar and Omani rial. With several lines on one invoice, the method makes a difference: UAE practice rounds VAT line by line, whereas Saudi e-invoices round the VAT total for the entire document, so results can differ by a fils.
Should the prices I display include VAT?
In the UAE, any price shown to consumers has to include VAT, and the Federal Tax Authority fines businesses that ignore this. Saudi guidance takes the same line for prices displayed to the public, although businesses dealing with each other can quote before VAT if both agree.
What about invoicing a client in another GCC country?
Cross-border invoicing, such as a Dubai business billing a client in Riyadh, has its own rules. Speak to an adviser before the first invoice goes out, not after.
