TikTok Spark Ads: paying to boost a creator's post

Spark Ads let a brand put paid reach behind a real TikTok post, keeping the creator's name, caption and engagement. Here is how the permission works, where campaigns go wrong, and what to settle with the creator before any money is spent.

A phone held up to record a stage, its screen glowing in a dark crowd

The TikTok ads that perform best seldom look like advertising. They look like a creator speaking to camera, with a caption in their own words and a comment section full of genuine replies. Spark Ads are how a brand pays for that. Rather than uploading a finished video into Ads Manager, the advertiser puts paid reach behind a post that already lives on TikTok, whether on the brand's own account or on a creator's.

What follows draws on TikTok's Ads Manager help pages and newsroom as they stood in September 2026.

The ad is the post

TikTok calls Spark Ads a native format that uses organic posts, and their features, in advertising. Put simply, the ad and the post are the same thing. The display name and caption come from the original and cannot be changed when the ad is set up. A tap on the profile picture or name takes the viewer to the owner's profile, not the brand's. Every like, comment and share the ad earns counts towards the original post, so the campaign builds up the creator's video as well.

  • The caption is carried over from the post and shown up to four lines, hashtags included. Ads that are not Spark Ads cannot carry hashtags, mentions or links in the caption.
  • The profile picture is the account's own.
  • A private video becomes public once a campaign uses it, so never authorise a draft the creator did not intend to publish.
  • One Ads Manager account can hold up to 10,000 Spark Ads.

How a creator grants permission

Permission is given video by video, through a code. In the TikTok app, the creator opens the video, taps the three dots, selects Ad settings and taps Generate, choosing whether the permission lasts 7, 30, 60 or 365 days. They send the code to the advertiser, who enters it in Ads Manager, where up to 20 codes can be added at once. A duet or a stitch needs a code from both creators.

Two problems come up often, and neither is hard to prevent. One is a code that expires before the campaign ends: TikTok flags an authorisation that finishes before the ad's end date, and an expired one shows as an error in Ads Manager. The other is a creator withdrawing permission mid-campaign, which appears in Ads Manager as Post authorization revoked. Both are contract failures, not technical ones.

Settle it in the contract

A Spark Ad is paid media built on a creator's work, and it should be priced and agreed that way before the video is filmed. The booking needs to cover:

  • Which videos may run as Spark Ads, and for how long. Ask for a code that lasts at least as long as the campaign, with some margin for an extension.
  • A fee for paid usage on top of the fee for the post. Boosting a video multiplies its reach, and the creator's rate should reflect that.
  • A commitment that the creator will not withdraw the code or delete the video during the agreed period.
  • Who approves the caption, since it cannot be changed once the ad is running.
  • Disclosure: paid and gifted content should use TikTok's branded content setting.

In the UAE, a creator who publishes advertising needs the advertiser permit. TikTok's pages do not mention it, but the rule applies to the post whatever the platform does, so confirm the permit when you book, before anything is signed.

Check the soundtrack

Music is where many Spark Ads come unstuck. Creators favour trending sounds, and a trending sound is often a commercial track the creator was allowed to use in an ordinary post. TikTok's rule for businesses is that ads, branded content and organic content should use its Commercial Music Library, which holds around a million pre-cleared tracks. For other people's original sounds, TikTok's advice is to consult your legal team. Before a creator's post becomes an ad, find out what the sound is, and ask for a version with library music if needed.

Buttons, links and landing pages

A Spark Ad carries a call to action button like any other ad. Some advertisers can also attach a link to the organic post itself, known as an organic anchor, which requires the TikTok Pixel and a verified account. TikTok also offers paid and organic optimisation, which adds an anchor link to the organic post at no cost. It works only with Spark Ads and is available in every Spark Ads market except the United States.

Finding the right creators

TikTok One, launched in 2024, absorbed the old Creator Marketplace and is where TikTok wants brands to find and brief creators. It suggests videos that would work as Spark Ads, lets advertisers request authorisation inside the platform, and then the authorised post is published through Ads Manager. Creators must be 18 or older and live in a market where TikTok One has launched, so confirm it covers your market before building a plan around it.

Automation and AI

TikTok's automated campaigns now handle Spark Ads as well. Since October 2025, Smart+ has run manual and automated campaigns in one setup flow, with asset groups of creative, a simpler Spark Ads setup and the traffic, sales, lead generation and app promotion objectives. TikTok's Symphony tools generate and edit video with AI, and content made with Symphony is automatically labelled as AI-generated. Whoever approves the ad on the brand side should know that before signing it off.

Gulf policy points that catch people out

TikTok treats the UAE and Saudi Arabia as one group in its advertising policies. Financial services ads must be licensed locally and shown only to people aged 18 and over. Crypto ads are allowed only with a trade licence that permits virtual asset business, again limited to 18 and over. Horoscope and fortune-telling ads are not allowed in either country. Branded content about food must respect local cultural and religious restrictions.

The audience is substantial. A study TikTok published with Redseer in September 2025 counted more than a million creators and more than 170,000 small businesses on TikTok in Saudi Arabia. A July 2026 study for the UAE put the number of small businesses running TikTok ads there at more than 70,000.

Before you boost a creator's post, check how their recent videos perform against accounts of a similar size, and price the paid usage as its own line on top of the post. If you are planning a creator campaign with Spark Ads in mind, we would be glad to hear from you at ALXO.
