UTM builder: tag campaign links for GA4
Tag any link for Google Analytics in a few seconds using presets for Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, WhatsApp, email and print. It spots the errors that split a campaign's figures and tells you which GA4 channel will receive the visits.

What it does
UTM tags are short labels on the end of a link that tell Google Analytics where a visit came from. Without them, a click from an Instagram story, a WhatsApp message and a newsletter can look exactly the same. Three are required: utm_source (where the visit comes from), utm_medium (the kind of traffic) and utm_campaign (the campaign's name). utm_content tells apart links within one campaign, utm_term is for paid search keywords, and utm_id is only needed if you import cost data into GA4.
The builder lowercases everything and swaps spaces for underscores unless you turn that off, because Analytics treats Instagram and instagram as two different sources. Its presets use mediums GA4 recognises, such as social, paid_social, email and cpc, so visits land in the right channel instead of Unassigned, and it shows that channel before you copy the link. It can also turn the finished link into a QR code. The last few links you copied are kept in this browser, and nothing is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Paste the address of the page you want people to land on.
- Pick a preset, such as Instagram story, TikTok ad or Email newsletter, or fill in source, medium and campaign yourself.
- Check the warnings and the GA4 channel the link will be filed under.
- Copy the link, or make a QR code of it for print.
Questions, answered
What are UTM parameters?
Short tags on the end of a link, namely utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign and a few optional extras, that let Google Analytics record where a visitor came from. Without them, a click from an Instagram story, one from a WhatsApp message and one from a newsletter can all end up looking identical.
Which UTM parameters are required?
Three of them: source, medium and campaign. The rest are optional. Content distinguishes two links inside the same campaign, term holds a paid search keyword, and campaign ID only matters if you bring cost data into GA4.
Why does my campaign appear twice in Google Analytics?
Almost always a capital letter or a space. Analytics reads case exactly, so Instagram and instagram become two sources, and Ramadan Sale and ramadan_sale two campaigns. By default the builder makes everything lowercase and turns spaces into underscores.
Why is my traffic showing as Unassigned in GA4?
GA4 files each visit under a channel based on its source and medium. If it does not recognise the medium, the visit goes to Unassigned. Stick to the standard values (social or paid_social for social media, email for newsletters, cpc for paid search), and check the channel the builder shows before you share the link.
Should influencer links carry UTM tags?
They should, with a separate link for each creator. Use the platform as the source, social as the medium, your campaign name as the campaign and the creator's handle as the content, and Analytics will show which creator drove the visits and sales.
Should I tag links between pages of my own website?
No. Tagging a link from one of your pages to another starts a fresh session and overwrites the visitor's real origin. Only tag links that bring people in from elsewhere.
