Static and free for good: what you typed is inside the pattern, so the code works without us and never expires. The flip side is that it cannot be edited after printing; to change where it goes, print a new one.
What it does
Many QR sites give you a code that points at their own server first, so they can count scans and let you change the destination. That works until the subscription ends, and then every printed code stops working. These codes are static: what you type is stored in the pattern itself, with nothing in between to switch off and no account or plan behind it.
The code is drawn in your browser, so a Wi-Fi password or phone number is never sent anywhere. Add a logo and the code switches to its highest error correction, which lets a camera read it with part of the pattern covered. Rounded and dotted styles change how each square is drawn, not which squares are dark, so they carry exactly the same pattern as a plain code, and every combination of dots, corners and logo has been tested with a standard QR reader. To count scans, put a UTM-tagged link in the code and the visits appear in Google Analytics.
How to use it
- Decide what the code should open: a web link, a WhatsApp chat, a Wi-Fi network, a contact card, an email or a text message.
- Fill in the details, such as the number with its country code for WhatsApp.
- Pick a style, keep dark dots on a light background, and add your logo if you want it.
- Download PNG for screens or SVG for print, and scan the final file on two phones before printing.
Questions, answered
Do these QR codes expire?
They do not. The content lives in the pattern, so the code keeps working for as long as whatever it points to does, without an account or subscription. Services that offer scan tracking and editing usually send people through their own server first, which is why their codes die when the subscription ends.
Can I change where a code points after printing?
A static code cannot be changed, because the destination is written into the pattern. If it may need to change, point the code at a page you control, such as yourbrand.com/menu, and update that page instead.
How do I track scans?
Add a UTM-tagged link to the code, and each visit is recorded in Google Analytics under that campaign. The UTM builder can produce the link and the code in one go.
How do I make a WhatsApp QR code?
Select WhatsApp, enter the number including its country code and, if you like, a message to start the conversation. Anyone who scans it lands in a chat with that number, message ready to send. WhatsApp Business numbers work the same way.
Which colours scan reliably?
Keep the dots dark and the background light, with plenty of difference between them. Reversed codes, light on dark, can look striking but many phone cameras fail to read them, and the generator will warn you. For print, black on white is the safest option.
How big should a printed code be?
Allow roughly 1 cm of code for each 10 cm people will stand away from it: 2 cm is enough on a business card, while a poster read from 2 metres needs 20 cm. Do not trim the white margin either. That quiet zone belongs to the code, and cutting it off is the usual reason a printed code fails to scan.
