Ads in the Snapchat inbox: a brand's guide to Sponsored Snaps
Sponsored Snaps land among messages from friends and open into a one to one chat with the brand. That makes the reply as important as the ad.

Nearly every ad format asks for attention in the middle of something else. Sponsored Snaps take a different route: they land in the Chat inbox, alongside messages from friends. Snap introduced them in October 2024, and any brand with a sizeable Snapchat audience (in Saudi Arabia, a long list) should understand them properly.
The details here come from Snap's business site, newsroom and investor letters, checked in September 2026. Snap's main help article on the format would not load at the time, so a few points rely on Snap's own search summaries and are flagged as such.
How it looks to the person receiving it
A Sponsored Snap shows up in the Chat inbox as a full-screen vertical Snap from the brand. Snap says it looks visibly different from other Snaps, carries an Ad badge, and arrives without a push notification, so it never buzzes a phone the way a friend's message would. If it stays unopened, it is removed. People can also clear it or report it.
Opening it shows the ad full screen, with the option to reply. A reply starts a one to one chat with the brand, and that is what separates this format from everything else Snap sells. A person sees only one Sponsored Snap at a time.
Planning the conversation
Brands can shape what happens once the chat opens. According to Snap's help summaries and documentation from its ad partners, the options include a branded chat background, a chat message of up to 500 characters, and an automatic reply of up to 500 characters or a video shorter than 3 minutes.
- Treat the chat message as the next step after the ad, not a copy of it: the offer, what to do now, and what the brand can help with.
- Make the automatic reply useful in its own right. It is the first answer anyone receives.
- Agree who will read and answer replies, and how quickly. An unanswered chat does more damage than no chat at all.
Eligibility and exclusions
Your ad account needs a linked public profile, and Snap's summaries add that the profile must have a profile photo. Several kinds of ad cannot use the format: ads for health, employment and credit, ads that include offer or discount details, and ads for competing platforms. Single image or video ads, Story ads and static collection ads can all be delivered to the Chat inbox.
Snap's pages list awareness and engagement, sales, app promotion and traffic among the objectives, pairing the Chat feed with Stories placements for the sales, app and traffic objectives. The sources are not fully consistent on this list, so confirm the options in Ads Manager when you build the campaign.
Availability
In December 2025 Snap said Sponsored Snaps had rolled out globally. The European Union and Norway came later, with a launch announced on 2 June 2026 and auction buying from July. Gulf brands can use the format now, and in Saudi Arabia it reaches an audience that lives in the app.
Snap's claims about performance
In its investor letter for the first quarter of 2026, Snap reported gains for the format of 226 percent in click-through rate and 59 percent in seven-day conversions, and said nearly 75 percent of its daily Chat users in the United States saw ads in Chat. In April 2026, announcing AI Sponsored Snaps (which put a brand's own AI agent into Chat, and are in alpha with Experian as the first partner), Snap said Sponsored Snaps deliver 22 percent more conversions at nearly 20 percent lower cost per action. These are Snap's figures about Snap's product: a reason to run a test, not a forecast for your account.
What the reports will and will not show
An impression counts when the ad is at least half on screen for at least one second, or when someone taps it. Snap's summaries say feed opens combine opens from the Chat inbox with opens from Discover, with no separate figure for the Chat feed, so you will not get a clean read on chat performance alone. Build your measurement around what happens after the open: replies, clicks and conversions.
Creative that fits the inbox
Snap's own advice for the format comes down to four points:
- A headline of roughly 24 to 28 characters, which fits without being cut off.
- Video under 10 seconds that looks like a Snap from a real person.
- Snap's own interface elements, such as the text bar, so the ad feels native to the app.
- A clear reason to reply, because the conversation is the whole point.
It also pays to preview the ad full screen, with the brand, headline and button styled as Snap shows them, since that is exactly what opens from the inbox.
When Sponsored Snaps make sense
The format suits offers that improve with a conversation: bookings, consultations, product questions and launches that invite questions. It suits a brand with nobody to answer the chat far less well. For Saudi businesses in particular, it is worth testing next to standard Snap Ads, with replies routed to whoever already handles your customer messages.
